TL: Why do you like being a Modified Beauty [MB]?
CCC: The MB Girls are a sisterhood of sorts. We support each other, we encourage each other and yes, sometimes we kick each other in the butt! (But always from a place of love) I am truly grateful to have found this group and more grateful that they accepted me into their ranks.
TL: What modifications do you have and how many?
CCC:
Piercings
2 Tragus
4 earlobe (2 in each ear)
1 top of ear (left)
Nose
VCH
Tattoos
Oak Leaves from my left shoulder to my right hip, down my back (there is a little ankh on my right hip nestled in there too.)
Celtic Willow on Right upper arm.
Vine wedding band (Left ring finger obviously)
Spray of Violets on my left foot for my daughter.
Timmain, the flying elf, on the right side of my belly button.
TL: When did you start your modifications?
CCC: I got my first tattoo as soon as I was legal to do so, which was 21 at the time in Illinois. (1st ear piercing 13, 2nd at 19 but did not get another piercing until I was 39, and got the rest done in that year)
TL: What is your favorite modification?
CCC: Though I have been on a bit of a piercing kick as of late, it has more to do that the piercings I wanted were less $ than the next tattoo I want. Tattoos are my first love.
TL: If you could give advice to anyone who is beginning the modification process, what would you tell them?
CCC: Think about them, think about them HARD. Think about placement, think about style, think about subject....and then get the best quality you can....these will be with you for the rest of your life.
TL: In your opinion, what does a modification mean to an individual? Does it change from person to person or is there a general sense of ‘I’m cool now, or I’m unique’?
CCC: I wouldn't try to generalize that. Everybody is different. Do some people get them to rebel? I am sure. Do some get them because "all the cool kids are" I am sure of that too. DO some people get them because they are drunk? I am positive. I myself got my ink because of meanings...some spiritual, some for someone, some to mark a survival, of sorts. For me, personally, there is a kind of healing , and letting go in that bit of pain, in that bit of shed blood. Enduring it and coming out the other side, with a bit of beauty to show for it. There is a marking of a time, a place, a person in the art on my skin...and yes, I look at it as ART. I think very carefully about placement, and even subject, and ponder things for a long time before doing them...but again, that is ME. My piercings...again there is healing in the pain, and enduring the healing. There is a certain amount of “I am stronger than the pain is" ...and I have always liked the way they look (everybody needs a little sparkle in their life, yes?)
TL: In your personal experience, did you get treated differently for your modifications, or were you treated the same as before you had them done?
CCC: Most of my ink is pretty unobtrusive, unless I am in a bikini. Only little bits peak out of most regular clothes, (strapless is another matter, but really don't have reason to wear strapless dresses much anymore, except in modeling) so being treated differently regularly, not really. I DO get looks and comments in my bathing suit, but the ones I hear are pretty complementary. ( I have gotten the occasional "why?" usually by older people...my response is usually "why not?" with a smile. ) Since I just got my nose done, it remains to be seen, what reactions if any there will be. I doubt there will be much of anything though....I simply am not that "extreme" And that is OK. Everybody should do things at their own level, their own pace, and to their own aesthetic. This is mine, and I am happy with it. That is all that matters, really isn't it? Be happy with yourself, as long as you aren't hurting anybody else...right?
TL: Is there anything that you may want to add?
CCC: I have nothing to hide, I will tell my story to anyone who asks,or I think needs to hear it. My life has not been easy (harder than some, easier than others) But I strive to find the beauty, the joy and yes, the love in everything I do. Life is what you make of it.
