TB:The modified Beauties are one big family, always there for each other.
TL:Who/what inspired you to begin your modifications?
TB:I was attracted to the taboo of the tattoo and so at 16 I began my journey.
TL:What modifications do you have and how many?
TB:I have a large percent of body tattooed. you come to a point where you just don't count anymore. i like to experience with piercings. if you can pierce it once, Ive done it multiple times. I'm now starting to get dermal implants. i think these are my favorite mods.
TL:When did you start your modifications?
TB:I was 14, I started out with a simple flesh piercing. My navel. It forever changed who i would become.
TL:What is your favorite modification?
TB:The ones that are just for me.
TL:If you could give advice to anyone who is beginning the modification process, what would you tell them?
TB:Yes its gonna hurt, yes you will be judged, and yes it will be worth it.
TL:In your opinion, what does a modification mean to an individual? Does it change from person to person or is there a general sense of ‘I’m cool now, or I’m unique’?
TB:it varies not everybody with modifications have them for the right reasons.
TL:In your personal experience, did you get treated differently for your modifications, or were you treated the same as before you had them done?
TB:Yes I've been treated differently. Between the medical field and law-enforcement, I have been judged harshly by some superiors.
TL:Is there anything that you may want to add?
TB:You only live once, go for it.

TL: Why do you like being a Modified Beauty [MB]? 

CC:Before I was accepted I felt drained, depressed, and like no one knew how I felt. I felt alone. I never really had a group of female friends that I could talk to let alone *relate* to. I was still recovering from the gall bladder removal when I applied/got accepted. & I felt like I'd been bleeding on the floor for hours, and all you girls came over with your hands extended to help me up. Then I started Dawn of The Dame.

TL:How has being a MB helped you?

CC:My self love is *much* better.

TL: Who/what inspired you to begin your modifications?

CC: Uh, actually the music video "Crawling" by Linkin Park. Chesder's labret & the girl in the video's septum ring intrigued me quite a bit.

TL: What modifications do you have and how many?

CC: My ears have been pierced since I was a baby (cause I was an awesome baby) so I stretched my lobes to a 00ga after getting my ears pierced a 2nd time (at the mall, awkward). Then, got my IV:XX tattoo when I was about 18/19 in college, because what the number means, saved my life (most can't read it, sad) then I got a heart on my upper left bicep, above my scars, for "To Write Love on her arms". Later had the heart filled in black and red put around the heart (because some people are allergic to red tattoo ink, & I always knew I was getting an Ariel tattoo), so now I just call that tattoo "heart burn" because...look at it! ><...moving on, I got a 16 hour Ariel quarter sleeve (totally planned on it being smaller) around the time my Grandma got really sick, it was completed and fully colored by the time she passed, after she passed in her memory I got an outline of a black heart (because she had the same on her right bicep) on my right bicep, with the words "Mama & Ma" followed by an infinity symbol, to represent my love of my mother & grandmother forever (more than forever). My mum let me get my lip pierced at 16, I got a right off center labret, followed by a labret, then a left off center labret that rejected. I got my tattoo's done at Stingray in Allston for, cleaning the owner's house ('cause we are fwends & I clean)...I am hoping my "heart burn" gets fixed soon. (Lawlz)

TL: When did you start your modifications?

CC: Oh. Age 0. I was literally 4 months old.

TL: What is your favorite modification?

CC: I can only pick one? I just answered a question with two questions? Well I have 3 favorites, lip rings and Ariel Tattoo, wait no...the IV:XX...wait, no. The tattoo for my Mum & Grandma, yes.

TL: If you could give advice to anyone who is beginning the modification process, what would you tell them?

CC: Be smart like me & go to professionals, don't have your friends do it. Google "rejected piercings" if you dare question my logic.

TL: In your opinion, what does a modification mean to an individual? Does it change from person to person or is there a general sense of ‘I’m cool now, or I’m unique’?

CC: If someone has a tattoo or something that they designed or has great meaning to it I believe that is unique. Picking out a design from a wall, in my opinion, does not make you unique. Unique means "uni" as in one. If more than one person has that tattoo, how are you unique? If that is what you are going for...trying to stand out. In general I believe a modification changes from person to person.

TL: In your personal experience, did you get treated differently for your modifications, or were you treated the same as before you had them done?

CC: People notice I have big lips more, because I needed a ring with a bigger diameter, people notice my cuts less, mytattoo get's called "cute" a lot. During a breast examination at a high ranked hospital they asked me what "IV:XX" read in roman numerals. They said "5:10?" I just kinda face palmed.

TL: Is there anything that you may want to add?

CC:Unicorns. The number 42. & the number 3.

My Most Meaningful Tattoo

in remembrance of her grandparents

This tattoo is in remembrance of my grandmother. She passed away when I was just 9 years old, but still had a major impact on my life. I lived with her and my grandfather for a year between first and second grade while my mother was preparing to give birth to her 4th child while also house hunting with my dad and the other kiddos. When my grandma passed away from lung cancer and emphysema, I experienced depression for the first time in my life. At school, I would have random crying outbursts in the middle of class, and I was put in grief and loss counseling for 3 years in a row. I still haven't fully gotten over it and I probably never will.

The panther with roses on my belly is for my grandmother (and grandfather, whom is still living). My grandma's name was Rose, and I chose the color red because it is the color of love, and also because it reminded me most of her (she always had long red fingernails). The panther is for my grandpa because the only tattoo he ever got was a panther clinging to his arm.

TL:Why do you like being a Modified Beauty [MB]?

CM:Well because its let me connect with so many girls who have similar interests internationally. I like that i can complain about my size shape or form and every girl will give me an out pour of support. its a wonderful feeling to know that i have friends that wont back stab me at a moments notice.

 

TL:How has being a MB helped you?

CM:The girls have definitely helped with my confidence and trust issues. granted both are not where i would like them to be at this singular point in time, its not nearly as bad as it used to be and that absolutely tickles me.

 

TL:Who/what inspired you to begin your modifications?

CM:When i was maybe 6 or 7 i watched my mom get a tattoo from a scratcher. I only know now that he was a scratcher, but the point is at that point i knew i wanted ink or metal in my skin. in about the 6th grade i started to wear a fake labret ring (i know, I'm cool) and finally pierced my lip myself. it was on my left side and it rejected quickly. i tried a few more times until finally i decided that i would just wait til i was 18 and i would go to a shop. my mom at this point had decided that i was ruining my face and wouldn't help me put metal in it lol. so, for my 18th birthday i got a surprise from my good friend Kara. she took me to a shop and got my labret done. Its a tad off center but i love it! at that moment i was addicted. not long afterward i got my first tattoo. Wings on my back, that were done by a great artist named Jaxx. I guess you can say what inspired me to modify myself was my parents.

 

TL:What modifications do you have and how many?

CM:at this current point in time i have 6 piercings and 4 tattoos. i want so many more, but yay for financial struggles. at one point i had 8 piercings but unfortunately i retired my tear drop dermal and my medusa. ):

 

TL:When did you start your modifications?

CM:In the above story, i kinda explain that i started my mods in the 6th grade. but modifications to me go so much further then putting a piercing in your face or getting a tattoo. I also have scars that serve as reminders for mistakes or things that have happened to me. those in itself are modifications because it changed my body and my appearance. so, you can say that i started to modify myself at about 7 years old.

 

TL:What is your favorite modification?

CM:my favorite modification are the lyrics across both wrists. they say "these wrists were split, when first we kissed" a constant reminder that no one is worth hurting myself over.

 

TL:If you could give advice to anyone who is beginning the modification process, what would you tell them?

CM:make sure that you see a licensed professional in a clean shop. do your research. get health scores before you go to a place. Don't just go to a place because you heard that they did an awesome job on your friends friends cousins uncles brother. that's how you end up with permanent damage. be smart.

 

TL:In your opinion, what does a modification mean to an individual?

CM:Does it change from person to person or is there a general sense of ‘I’m cool now, or I’m unique’? to me a modification is a mark in your life that you either want to remember or something you changed.

 

TL:In your personal experience, did you get treated differently for your modifications, or were you treated the same as before you had them done?

CM: I definitely get treated different which is ridiculous because i am the same person. I could understand if i was this significantly different person, but I'm not. I'm still Constance.

 

TL:Is there anything that you may want to add?

CM: love and light. remember that a person is a person no matter the mod!

D: I really dig being a part of a community of incredibly strong, diverse & colorful group of women.
 
TL: How has being a MB helped you?
D: That I’m not alone in my endeavors to see:  How many holes I can put into my body?  What other funky hair color can I come up with? or  I NEED MORE INK!  It’s truly nice  not to hear, “OMG, why would you  DO that to yourself?”  *le eyeroll* 
TL: Who/what inspired you to begin your modifications?
D: Not being allowed to!  I come from a VERY small town & when the piercing bug bit, it bit hard!  There were not a lot of resources to research things or even get things professionally done.  I had pierced my eyebrow, nipples & navel myself by the time I was 13, lol.  Nothing got infected, thank goodness…  My first “real” piercing was when I was 18 & it was my tongue.
 
TL: What modifications do you have and how many?
D: I have my left nostril pierced (16g), septum (10g), medusa (16g), 3 in my tongue (two 10g & a 14g), my hair is short, choppy & I’ve currently got a bright red peek-a-boo highlight in my bangs…oh & half of it is shaved off.  I have 8 tattoos right now.  I need more!!
 
TL: When did you start your modifications?
D: I started them myself at 13.  I got my first professional piercing at 18.  I’ve been dyeing my hair ever since I was 12.
 
TL: What is your favorite modification?
D: I really love my Borneo Roses.  I’ve been wanting them for so so long & I had to wait forever to get them.  They’re for protection against evil & malicious spirits.  Today’s a crazy time…need all the help I can get, lol.  
 
TL:If you could give advice to anyone who is beginning the modification process, what would you tell them?
D: There is NOTHING wrong with being bold, but start slow, start small & think about “down the road”.  I’m dealing with stupid eyebrow scars from botched piercings years ago & it’s really annoying.  Oh & some trendy tribals I wish I would have through before getting done.
 
TL: In your opinion, what does a modification mean to an individual? Does it change from person to person or is there a general sense of ‘I’m cool now, or I’m unique’?
D: I believe it changes from person to person.  There’s nothing wrong, in my opinion of someone getting a navel piercing to experiment with their body in a more subtle way.  To me there’s also nothing wrong with someone getting metal spikes implanted into their head either.  I think to a degree all of us MB’s think we’re pretty bad ass.  Our modifications are what we have control of & that’s powerful - not necessarily “cool” or “trendy”…
 
TL: In your personal experience, did you get treated differently for your modifications, or were you treated the same as before you had them done?
D: I’ve been getting the stink eye about my hair, piercings, tattoos, clothing foreverrrr!  Since becoming a mother & moving to a very suburban Florida city, it hasn’t gotten better.  However, if someone gives me the time of day, they’ll see that I’m  usually nicer & more polite than the average person!

TL: Why do you like being a Modified Beauty [MB]?

LB: Since joining the group I have gotten to know more people [maybe not as well as i would like to].  It has given me a reason to wake up in the morning and see what my new friends across the country [even other countries] are doing, struggling with, or if i have a question on anything from health, beauty, spiritual, mental, tattoos... you name it... someone here is bound to have some knowledge or insight that is new to me.
TL: How has being a MB helped you?

LB: Before MB, I was a very quite person on FB. Being in the group, they encourage participation and it has helped me accept me for who i am  and things that i cannot change about myself. Since there are so many things to do within the group, it has helped me learn new tricks with things such as dying hair or which products others prefer. its like having a huge database of knowledge right at your fingertips and you know its genuine because everyone else within MB are human just like me. It has also helped me vent since we have a section for those who have problems in their life or just need to rant and the girls can give their insight and help in any way that they can.
TL: Who/what inspired you to begin your modifications?

LB: I would have to thank my ex boyfriend who was an artist for my inspiration in the art culture. i bought him his first tattoo gun and was fascinated ever since then.
TL: What modifications do you have and how many?

LB: Right now I only have 2 tattoos, a treble clef on my wrist for my passion for music and clouds which represent chaos in my life and flowers on my right arm/shoulder which represent the true beauty that being alive brings so my interpretation would be, with all the chaos going on in my life i have to stay grounded and look at the true beauty in life... never give up, and my original ear lobed pierced but have them stretched to an 8 gauge because i am too scared to go further but i do want to.
TL: When did you start your modifications?

LB: I started my ears when i was 6 months but gaged at 21 and my tattoos at 25
TL: What is your favorite modification?

LB: i have to say all of my modifications hold equal ground of favoritism, if not then why did i get them?
TL:  If you could give advice to anyone who is beginning the modification process, what would you tell them?

LB: Make sure you know what you want. Don't go and pick one off the wall because you want this to be a unique experience for you. Make sure you know the artist's reputation before handing over any money or sitting in their chair.
TL: In your opinion, what does a modification mean to an individual? Does it change from person to person or is there a general sense of ‘I’m cool now, or I’m unique’?

LB: I  honestly believe that it should have a deep meaning to the person getting tattooed. I know people who have gone in and said "oh that looks cool" got it... then got home and years later they still regret ever getting it. I did mine to cover up scars but i made sure that it was something unique to me.
TL: In your personal experience, did you get treated differently for your modifications, or were you treated the same as before you had them done?

LB: I thought that my family wouldnt approve of it but to my surprise they all told me its my body and i can do what i want. so i guess i can say i was treated the same. The only people that looked down on me were my boyfriends parents but they learned to accept me and my modifications.
TL: Is there anything that you may want to add?

LB: Make sure you know what you are getting yourself into before sitting in the chair to get any modifications done.  Tattoos are permanent, if you can say you want it 110% then you should not be getting it done at all. <3

TL: Why do you like being a Modified Beauty [MB]?

KS: I like being a MB because I get to interact with so many different women- different lifestyles, different opinions, and different experiences. We're all modified but still support each other through good and bad.

TL: How has being a MB helped you?

KS: It’s helped me get out of my shell a bit and experiment with things I may not have done. 

TL: Who/what inspired you to begin your modifications?

KS: Friends, family, and just a desire to decorate. I've been in love with tattoos and piercings for as long as I can remember.

TL: What modifications do you have and how many?

KS: Currently, I have 12 tattoos and 6 lobe piercings. In the past, I've had many more piercings and I've removed them due to personal decisions in life. I do plan to replace them in the future. 

TL: When did you start your modifications?

KS: One week after I turned 18, as soon as my birthday money came in.

TL: What is your favorite modification?

KS: My favorite one (at this point anyway) is my NOH8 tattoo across my heart. I have a passion for equality and this tattoo was done to show support for gay and lesbian community.

TL:  If you could give advice to anyone who is beginning the modification process, what would you tell them?

KS: Go somewhere reputable. Ink can be fixed, Piercings can come out, but if you don't go to a reputable shop, you can end up with worse than a bad tattoo or piercing. Cheap can be harmful.

TL: In your opinion, what does a modification mean to an individual? Does it change from person to person or is there a general sense of ‘I’m cool now, or I’m unique’?

KS:I think the modifications have different meanings for everyone. I didn't get mine to be 'cool' or 'unique' I got them because they meant something to me. The person is still the same; they just have the balls to show something important to them on the outside.

TL: In your personal experience, did you get treated differently for your modifications, or were you treated the same as before you had them done?

KS: The people who matter treated me the same. I think I get more questions now, especially from children, who want to know what it means, or why it's there and not coming off. I get a lot of 'OH so pretty!' The biggest change was from family. I expected them to treat me differently, especially at my wedding, where most of my ink was visible. Instead, they were asking questions and wanting to know the story behind it. 

TL: Is there anything that you may want to add?

KS: Just be yourself. Don't get modified because it's cool, or because everyone else is doing it. Get modified because YOU want it. Because the mod means something to YOU. If you yourself are scared to death of needles, find other ways to be modified, if that's what you want. Hair/Makeup/Clothes.... Modifications come in all styles.
